“Are Artificial Sweeteners Causing You To Gain Weight?”
Don’t you wonder why we have so much obesity in our country when we have diet pop? It seems like obesity is getting worse, not better. What is the problem?
Our brains really know how to get our body ready for food. Just by thinking about food our body is preparing to regulate our weight, metabolism, etc. If you eat something or drink something sweet, this signals your body that something sweet is on the way and we produce hormonal and metabolic responses to this. When you trick your body with non-nutritive sweeteners like aspartame, sucralose or saccharin, it gets confused.
Studies show this. A study in the Journal of Behavioral Neuroscience shows that these sweeteners not only don’t prevent weight gain but set into action a set of responses that causes you to gain weight!
The researchers gave two groups of rats yogurt. One batch was sweetened with sugar and the other with saccharin. The rats that ate the yogurt with artificial sweetener ate more food than the other group, so it stimulated their appetite. They also gained more weight and body fat than the other group. The other crazy thing that happened is that their core body temperature went down – metabolism decreased. This shows that it does matter what you consume. So, even though the calories were lower, they gained more weight and fat!
Maybe instead of being called diet drinks, they should be weight gain drinks! A lot of people are consuming these foods and drinks and they don’t seem to be working.
Bottom line is to stop confusing your body. Get rid of artificial sweeteners in your diet.
